Multipart Plastic Charman Mao Tse Tung Communist Revolution China BadgeMultipart Plastic Charman Mao Tse Tung Communist Revolution China Badge Product Description : Multipart Plastic Charman Mao Tse Tung Communist Revolution China BadgeA bronze coloured, non-aluminium, plastic badge with a 2.8cm high badge face and a safety clasp style fastener to the rear. Manufactured during the 1950's cultural revolution in China. It has a clear red inside to give the impression of a rising sun. Featuring Mao's profile in raised 3D. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND. About five billion badges are estimated to have been produced during the Cultural Revolution (1966-69). Some, however, were melted down in 1969 when Mao responded to an excessive burst of badge-production by saying he needed aluminium for aeroplanes. Many designs show a middle-aged Mao's head in profile. The symbolism of the badges varies. Some use international symbols of communism, such as the hammer and sickle. Other symbols are uniquely Chinese. The most common slogan is "Long Live Chairman Mao!" Some badges depict China's "revolutionary sacred sites", which zealous communists would tour - collecting badges on the way. The sites include Mao's birthplace, Shaoshan, "where the sun rises", and Tiananmen, the main entrance to the Imperial City. The badges may also depict symbolic flowers, such as plum blossom, signifying "survival in difficult circumstances". These circumstances included the split with the USSR, and the threat from "imperialist aggressors", sometimes referred to as "leopards and tigers".
